The GCC compilers don't install by default. You have to select them within the "Devel" section of the package tree in setup.exe

@Tiki - I tend to put cygwin on my non-UNIX/Linux based systems for the various utilities it provides and I'm not an iPhone developer. Having access to the find, sed, grep, and other utility commands can be surpisingly useful. I do software development, just not for mobile devices though so maybe developers in general (at least those familiar with other operating systems) tend to prefer some command line utilities. What Microsoft includes in their DOS or even their Windows Explorer search doesn't always work. Ever try searching for words in .java files using Windows Explorer? I often find that the search comes back with zero results when I know there are files containing the search text.

As for setting it up, I believe all I did the last time was run the initial installer and then edit my PATH variable to include it early in the list. For systems where I just copied the files, I only needed to reference the PATH (no need to run the installer).

** Edit **

Right click on your "My Computer" (can be done from the desktop, start menu, or Windows Explorer) and select Properties. From the menu that is displayed, select the Advanced tab. At the bottom you'll then see the Environment Variables button. Click that to bring up the Environment Variables menu. In the System variables section, locate the PATH variable and click the Edit button.

Wow, either someone's going old school or someone's going to try their hand at iPhone app dev on Windows!!! There's really a TON of information missing in your question as Cygwin is kind of a bugger to deal with and there's a bajillion different ways to get it up and running. It's been some time since I did this, but post up your operating system (XP, Vista, 7, Ubuntu, Red Hat whatever) and which version of Cygwin you're using as well as a link to the tutorial you're referring to (if it's the included one then just let me know) and I can get you rolling on it.

If you are wanting to do Apple Dev - you will never get any apps submitted to the app store unless the apps are signed on an Apple machine. It's lame yeah, but you can still post them up on Cydia for jailbroken devices!!!
