I'm getting into creating art on the computer, primarily through Gimp until i purchase Photoshop. I'm doing mostly concept art, so idk if thatll make a diffence. Basiclly I want tot know what the advantages are of using a graphics tablet over a mouse. Also, what is a good "budget" tablet. I'm a beginner, so if I purchase one, i want it to be nice, but more on the less costly side. Thanks for any answers!

Advantages of using a graphics tablet?

Everything!

It takes a while getting used to drawing on a tablet, but once you do, you'll enjoy it much more. It makes creating digital art extremely easy. Using a mouse is absolutely nothing compared to an actual tablet.

The best beginners tablet you can get that should last you at least 3~4 years would be a Bamboo Connect (Google it, first link), but if you don't want to spend $80, you can always buy a Monoprice tablet (Google it, first link) which are around the $20-$40 range. I highly recommend getting a Bamboo as your first tablet though, it'll help ease you into it, and Bamboo tablets are known for being tough, which means it'll last a long time.

A graphics tablet in an input device like a keyboard, therefore useless without a computer of some description to use it on!

The advantage of a graphics tablet - is that without one, it's almost impossible to draw freehand with a mouse. A mouse also has no pressure sensitivity, whereas a graphics tablet does.

GIMP is adequate for digital art. Photoshop has no extras that GIMP doesn't have already for the digital artist. Photoshop is total overkill for digital art, even Elements is more appropriate.

There is other free open source software on offer that is even better for digital art than the two main image editors (GIMP and Photsohop) - such as MyPaint http://www.mypaint.intilinux.org and Krita http://www.krita.org - not to mention the GPS addon for GIMP (GIMP Paint Studio) http://code.google.com/p/gps-gimp-paint-studio/

There is no separate keyboard and it should be lighter.
