I am not sure what RHEL uses for an updater and I am not sure if you can access a webpage from the Bash prompt without the GUI even to download something I don't think I am that Linux Proficient. But you may want to try Yellow-Dog updater Modified (yum) to see if you can install GNOME or KDE. Then see if it is in the repositories or go to suns site and download it.

REHL is not free, it is Red Hats Commercial Software, Fedora is free and contributes to the Red Hat RHEL software. If you are going for a certification, it probably would make no sense to use some other version of Linux, even though, basically they all function and operated the same when it comes to the operating systems files. Red Hat uses .rpm files, Mandriva uses .rpm files and PCLinuxOS uses .rpm files also. You can use the other versions to test things out, using them as a LiveCD. Wish you the best. Centos is Unix based, Ubuntu is Debain/Ubuntu based (root access disabled).
