Just in the same way you can cross over from Photoshop to edit an image in ImageReady? Is it possible to do that from Illustrator to Photoshop?

Of course. Launch illustrator and photoshop, you can simply copy/cut and paste from photoshop to illustrator and vice-versa. But if you copy and paste from photoshop to illustrator, the image will be automatically embedded in illustrator when you save as ai or pdf, and the ai / pdf file will be huge (if your image is too large you wont be able to paste it - not enough memory to support). So if you want to have the image in illustrator so that you can type some text on it, you should place/ link it instead of paste it, (file > place), (illustrator will read the image from the source file, if you accidentally delete it and it wont be in the ai file)so the ai/pdf file size will be smaller you can edit the image file again and replace / relink it, and psd file can have transparent background in illustrator (V9 and above). If you copy/cut and paste from illustrator to photoshop, you can paste as pixel, path, smart object / shaped layer (vCS and above), smart object can be replaced easily when you edit the source file.

There is not a Jump To that I know of, but yes you can edit images started in Illustrator and transfer them to Photoshop. If you go to Export you'll notice that you can save the file with a Photoshop extension. You might also try saving it as a jpeg and opening it in Photoshop to edit. I'd try both to see which gives you the best results.

maybe it depends on the version, but I had no problem transferring my photoshop files to illustrator without having to change the type of file it was in photoshop because if you still want to edit ur pic and save it as a different type of file, it might fuse the layers together so that you cant change the pic anymore.

Yes, but you will have to convert it into a different format, because Illustrator is based on vector-graphics while Photoshop is based on pixel-graphics. You'll need to convert it to something like a GIF, PSD, JPEG or another pixel-based format.
