every website searches for some default name as the starting page of the web site like

index, home, default etc. this settings is done when the website is hosted.

you just need to find the default name of your web site, then rename your index.html to name . hope this will help. you can ask your provider to know the default name.

Please keep in mind, the extension of the file is also important. i meant index.html and index.htm is not same.

Hmm.. Maybe try and make your FTP'ing to the 'public_html' server directory (your website folder which the browser of a user looks for).

If you need FTP details, ask the webhost. (They should have a help/support ticket service)

If you need FTP client, use FileZilla(-I've heard is quite good) or CoreFTP(-I use)

Is this an issue with FTP or are you not uploading to the root of your server? Your question is unclear.
