Question:
Microsoft Word and Floorplan Layouts?

I need a floorplan layout program -- I manage our company trade show booth. I use Microsoft Word

My questions:

1. Does Word itself have any way to do this or must I use a third party program?

2. If I need to use a third party program, do you know any free or inexpensive programs I can use to do this? I want something very simple and very easy to learn. I do not need many features, just basic layout.

3. How do I embed the layout into a Word document?

There are some drawing capabilities in WORD, however they are pretty basic. Do you have Microsoft Publisher? Publisher has a much easier drawing interface and may work for your purposes. Being part of the Microsoft Office Suite, the drawings can be embedded.

1. Create on a PowerPoint Presentaion slide. Bit fiddly, but you can do it. Home - Drawing, select lines, shapes etc.

2. I've done it using PowerPoint. Microsoft Visio is good but expensive, however, you can download it for a 60 day free trial. This may suit your immediate needs, but if you get on OK with PPT, then go that way.http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/ee390821

3. Insert - Object - Create from File - Display as Icon (click on Icon and will open embedded doc)

Word has a drawing tool that you could use to do primitive layout editing (rectangles and such) but it is pretty clumsy.

If you have a really good version of MS Office, you might have Visio which has very good floor-plan design. If you just wanted a simple diagram with boxes you could drag around, you might be able to do that with PowerPoint.

If you don't have PowerPoint, there is an equivalent in the freeware openoffice.org suite.

If you want to try a free online tool, http://floorplanner.com/ has free "basic" accounts which might be good enough for your purposes.

If absolutely nothing appears on the screen except your document, you've gotten into Full Screen mode. Do this: 1. Press and hold the Alt key, then press V, then U. (Hold the Alt key down for both letters.) If you have the window frame (usually Blue in Windows XP), but not all the menus you want, do this instead: 1. Press CTRL/V followed by CTRL/T. A menu will pop up. 2. Select Customize at the bottom. 3. Click the Toolbars tab. 4. Reselect the toolbars you want. 5. Click Close. That should do it.
