I've just been looking around the crytek websites and there offering a free SDK version of cryengine 3. i was looking at the licenses and the very last one says "if you plan on making a AAA game and you would like access to the source code please contact us" what is this source code and why would you need it for a game..

The source code is the raw code used to build the CryEngine 3 game engine. The only reason you would want the source code is if you wanted to tweak the engine specifically for your game. This should only be done if you really know what you are doing.

Any type (digital, computer) of application, software, game needs to be written in a programming language, when you write code for the software this code is called "source code" the code that makes the software.

you need source code because it makes the software do what it needs to do, it gives instructions on how to carry things out, also the SDK stands for Software Development Kit its a kit full of tools and code to help you with making things with thier technology

the source code is important to software as an engine is to a car

Source code is the raw data. You can see the source code of everything these days. Even this page. Just right click "Inspect element" and the bottom part of the page will be the source code.

this is an previous standard of mine - grew up on Borland and there is often Borland quicker C++. that's a reliable platform to start getting to understand on. Then you will pass onto Borland C++ Builder. MS seen Studio C++ is okay yet does not have all the components that i might like.
