Is it possible somehow to automate "Internet Explorer"? I want it to periodically open some webpages and save them onto my desktop.

Sure you can, if you're a programmer I recommend the WatiN framework for doing this. You could probably write your app to do this in less than 10 lines of code.

If you are a VB programmer then you can create an application which will fire up internet explorer and do the actions you want. This can then be scheduled using the Windows Scheduler.

Not sure if you can do it with explorer since I have stopped using it. Matter of fact, I refer to it as Exploder now..lol

I have been using Firefox and Opera browser. You can do it with Opera for sure but not sure how to do it with Explorer.
