For historical reasons the default page was originally an "index" to the rest of the website. This is the only reason for the filename index.html, but most webmasters (including me) don't bother to change the default. Sometimes you see default.htm or default.asp etc but the name itself is arbitrary and can be set up in a web server configuration file.

If the homepage is http:// www.something.com/index.html, you can refer to it as http:// www.something.com/ or even http:// www.something.com -- all will work fine.

For the default page was originally an "index". Logic means that, automatically index.html is a default page.

When making websites, index is automatically recognised as the first page, so a fiule saved as index will be the one that opens when you first go to a website via the generic url. I think its a matter of the hosting server or something as to whether or not it actually bothers to display the name index.

Webservers like Apache let you tell it the default file to use when a directory (something ending in a /) is requested.

In apache, the configuration directive is "DirectoryIndex"

This is what causes a request for http://host/ to really send you http://host/index.html (although it doesn't show up that way in your browser)

because they are lazy and don't feel like renaming the default page which is, by default, named "index.html"
