Something you have (e.g. a phone to receive SMS codes) and something you know (e.g. a password). You need both to authenticate yourself with the system

Two factor authentication means you do two things with same product or a machine . I think Mobile phone is the best answer for it . It's really good example of two factor authentication . Hope you will get your desired answer .

A very simple example is an ATM; you need both the card (one) and the PIN (two) to access the account.

Google uses something similar; if you activate two-step verification, you need to enter both your password and a dynamically created security code to log in. You get the code as a text or in Google's Authenticator app.

Two factor authentication basically means that, when you create an account, you're authenticating it in two ways.

Single factor authentication is usually clicking on the confirmation link in the creation email.

Two factor will usually use that, as well as employing a second means of authentication, such as a mobile phone text that needs to be responded to, or a phone call which tells you a code that must be given when registering.

It's for additional security, so your account is confirmed to be yours. It also means that, if your account is taken over and the email is changed, you can still recover your account through a phone recovery system or something similar.
