I need to create a directory which I can upload my private files to using FTP.

Can anyone help?

I have tried to use one where I create a .htaccess file, but my site would not allow me to upload the file??? do to some permission problems.

If you have access to Cpanel on your website, go to files.

Select the directory you want and change the permissions.

Some will allow you to add a password.

You could put all your files into a password protected zip file and upload that. The only problem is that you would need to unzip them to access them. On the plus side it is the most secure method of securing your data.

If you visit www.dynamicdrive.com there is a simple javascript password box that you can use. it is on simple but it might help you out.
