Question:
Please Help? Windows 98 se basic sound not installed?
2008-10-16 09:09:45 UTC
I recently installed windows 98se onto 2 dif computers one has sound card one doesnt.BOTH COMP DONT HAVE THE BASIC SOUND INSTALLED.The one with sound card i properly installed the card and drivers for it.BUT for instance when i go to start / programs / accessories / entertainment ...The volum control icon is there but its empty nothing happens when i click on it.Another for instance to explain my problem is under control pannel / multimedea properties / audio ...the window is shaded and it says no record or playback devices installed and the box to check for place volume control on task bar is checked but shaded and cant check or uncheck it.ITS LIKE THERE IS NO Basic Windows Sound Installed. One other important detail ill mention is both computers have always been windows 98 this isnt a upgrade or downgrade from original, just reformatted hard drives and new clean install with all windows updates installed as well.I Installed the graphix card drivers and the ethernet drivers both working fine.Only thing i cant figure out is why on both computers ther seams to be no Basic Windows Sound.Funny thing is when i go to safe mode i see the windows sound devices listed uner my comp / properties / sound devices...But not when i boot up reg windows program. All i see then on the one computer is the sound card installed correctly. One other thing i might add is that this same win98se cd has been used to install on 5 other computers i use that work perfectly so i dont think its problem with the instalation CD.I have asked this question several times and not had a helpfull answer yet.the volume control icon is not on the task bar and there is no way at this time for me to put it there its like the basic windows audio isnt there.

Not sure I can answer all your questions but to put the sound volume control on the task bar, you have it correct. Go to Start>Settings>Control Panel double click on the Multimedia icon. Choose the Audio tab and put a check mark in the Show Volume Control in the Task Bar box. This only works IF you have the sound card AND sound card drivers installed properly, otherwise Windows cannot determine if there is a sound card driver installed and without the driver the option to use the volume control is grayed out. (Not available)

The Windows 98 disk may not install the drivers for the sound cards. Windows 98 SE comes with a limited selection of audio devices that it can install the audio drivers for. For those it did not install drivers for you will need to go onto the Internet and download the specific sound drivers for the make and model of sound card you have. Make sure you get the Windows 98 drivers as the Windows 2000 or XP drivers will not work.

Most sound drivers for Windows 98 era sound cards are installed though a setup option in the downloaded driver program. Download the drivers and run the install program. That will correct your sound problems and you can then activate the show audio control on the task bar option.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.pcboostcleaner.com

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.
