i googled free CMS and quite a few came up, i odnt know about them myself. Can anyone recommend one that's powerful and simple to use and install?

Lots of people at work use Plone which seems to be good (or at least one of the less rubbish ones).

Kruser's answer is confused between CMS and CVS, which is a version control system.
What you want is a CMS, a content management system. There are plenty of excellent free ones - Joomla, Drupal and Typo3 are among the most well-known.
There's an excellent site called http://www.opensourcecms.com that has installed versions of all the main free CMSs, allowing you to login and try them out.
