Hi,
when I add a header to a document, do you know how I can make it start from the second page and not from the first which is my title page. Thanks alot.

You make the first page a distinct section, then number the pages in the section after it, this way: (Note: This entry is long because it contains two sets of instructions: One for Word 2007 and one for previous versions.)

In Word versions earlier than Word 2007 (Vista):

1.At the top of the second page, click the Insert->Break menu item.

2.Insert a Next Page type section break.

3.Move the cursor down a few lines so it's in the new section you just created.

4.Click on the View->Headers and Footers menu item. You should now see and be able to edit the section's header.

5.One of the icons on the Headers toolbar that pops up, probably the fifth from the right, will say "Same as Previous" when you hover the cursor over it. Click it to disconnect the header from the previous one.

6.The one to its right will say "Switch between Header and Footer" Click it.

7.You're now in the footer. Repeat step 5.

8.A third icon, probably the one to the right of the Switch one, will say "Move to Previous" Click it. You've now moved to the footer of the first section.

9.If there's a page number in the header or footer for this section, delete it.

10.Close the toolbar.

11.Go into the second section.

12.Click on the Insert->Page Numbers menu item.

13.Click on the Format button.

14.Click Start At. A 1 should show up in the list box adjacent to it.

15.Click OK.

16.Click OK to actually insert the page number.

In Word 2007:

1.Click at the top of the second page.

2.Click the Page Layout tab on the Ribbon.

3.Click the Breaks icon in the Page Setup group.

4.Insert a Next Page type section break.

5.Click on the Insert tab on the Ribbon.

6.Click the Header icon and select Edit Header.

7.Deselect Link To Previous in the Design tab that appeared on the Ribbon.

8.Go back to the Insert tab and repeat Steps 5 to 7 for the Footer.

9.If there's a page number in the header or footer for the first section, delete it.

10.Go into the second section.

11.On the Design tab again, click the Page Number icon

12.Click Format Page Numbers.

13.Click Start At. A 1 should show up in the list box adjacent to it.

14.Click OK.

15.Click OK to actually insert the page number.

That should do it. What you now have is two sections. Both sections have headers and footers, but the page number will appear only in the second section.

Hope that helps.

Insert a header on the page, then on the Header/Footer toolbar, choose "Format Page Number". On this, set the "Start at page number:" to 0. Delete the number from the top header, go to the second page's header and click the Page Number button. Should work. This is 2003, BTW.

"Create a different first page header or footer

You can leave the header or footer (header and footer: A header, which can consist of text or graphics, appears at the top of every page in a section. A footer appears at the bottom of every page. Headers and footers often contain page numbers, chapter titles, dates, and author names.) off the first page or create a unique first page header or footer for the first page in a document or the first page of each section within a document.

1. If your document is divided into sections (section: A portion of a document in which you set certain page formatting options. You create a new section when you want to change such properties as line numbering, number of columns, or headers and footers.), click in a section or select multiple sections you want to change. Click anywhere if your document is not divided into sections.

2. On the View menu, click Header and Footer.

3. On the Header and Footer toolbar (toolbar: A bar with buttons and options that you use to carry out commands. To display a toolbar, press ALT and then SHIFT+F10.), click Page Setup Button image.

4. Click the Layout tab.

5. Select the Different first page check box, and then click OK.

6. If necessary, click Show Previous Button image or Show Next Button image on the Header and Footer toolbar to move into the First Page Header area or First Page Footer area.

7. Create the header or footer for the first page of the document or section.

If you don't want a header or footer on the first page, leave the header and footer areas blank.

8. To move to the header or footer for the rest of the document or section, click Show Next Button image on the Header and Footer toolbar. Then create the header or footer you want."
