It's an Internet protocol that email and other programs use to look up information from a server.

LDAP is a (supposedly lightweight) 'directory access protocol'. It's a language used between an LDAP server and a client.

LDAP is often used as a very informative kind of address book. The protocol can be used to 'log in' into the directory, search through it and change/update information.

LDAP is sometimes just used for it's authentication mechanism; some services use LDAP to log in users.
