I'm new to mac, and i'm trying to edit a video.
When the video is downloaded from my camera it automatically becomes a .avi file and when i try to open it with adobe after effects, or even imovie the file type isn't recognized. Is there a was i can change the file type?

You may take a look at this step by step guide, it will teach you how to convert avi video to mp4 or mov video, Mac supports MP4 and MOV video well.

Hope it helps. Contact me if you have any other question or use http://www.ask.com to search more answers.

Open iMovie and from the File menu, choose "Import..." Then navigate to your .avi file and open it. This should allow you to add the file to your movie. Something similar is probably true for AfterEffects, but as I don't have it I don't know the specific command.

If it doesn't work, your video camera might be making malformed .avi files (the .avi format is prone to glitches and errors). Try using iMovie to import from the camera directly. You can do this by flipping the little "switch" above the timeline to the left (the camera icon).

Good luck!
