personally, I would go to fedora, which is sponsored by red hat. Linux is actually a branch of the UNIX OS. a lot of UNIX commands actually work in distros of linux, however, some of the codes are just a tad different when you switch distros. For example: if you were to use the get command in one distro, you may have to use the wget command in another. Here is a link of common terminal commands in fedora. I would also suggest installing from a live DVD rather than a netinstall

Linux is not, and has never been, UNIX.

BSD is your best bet. Free, Open, or Net BSD.... Doesn't really matter. Solaris is second choice if BSD is too hard. All four are free.

Most of the commands are the same, although specific syntax differs slightly, even between true UNIXes.

You're not going to learn UNIX in a month.

Yes you can use UBUNTU...It's good to use....I am using it...it's nice...Just open the terminal and type your commands...

NOTE: in ubuntu if you want to log in as a root user in terminal type the following:

sudo su;

it will prompt for pass word..

and other commands are same...

? are you attracted to that output? if no, merely redirect to /dev/null are you fascinated partly of... in accordance to key phrases? use grep to opt for lines containing the foremost-word (and a context, in case you elect, with -A and -B)... that's a "based" log? merely think of your self a script to extract the records you have an activity and reformat them, then nicely outputting... (awk can help alot, or perl, or... too many...)
