When you want a computer program that does something, but you don't have one, you usually have a couple of options. You can go out and buy the program and install it on your computer, or you can find one online and download it and install it. But sometimes there just isn't a program out there that does what you want!

So what do you do in these situations? Well, if you're a programmer, you can make your own program that does whatever you want it to do. The problem is, you can't just type something into your computer and make a program that works. You need a helper program that turns what you type into a real Computer Program. These helper programs are usually called "compilers" or "interpreters," and Python 2.5 is one of those "interpreter" helper programs. It interprets what a programmer types into the computer and turns it into a program you can use.

Python is not dangerous by itself. It's actually a really helpful tool for programmers. If you know anyone who's good at computers who uses your computer sometimes, he/she is probably the one who installed it. Aside from that, there are a few other programs out there that might have installed Python on your computer automatically because they might need it to run properly, so uninstalling it might break something else in your computer.

Python is a programming language, like Java, which you probably have installed on your computer as well. It will take the program script that the programmer wrote, and compile it and run it as a program on your computer.

I imagine you downloaded some software program that uses the Python language, and both were installed at the same time.

It is an interpreter for programs written in the Python programming language. You need it to run any Python programs you may have.

It's a procedural programming language, similar to PHP or so.

It needs a server to run on, so did you just install a server? Or already have one installed around the same time?

As long as the programs signature is correct, than it shouldn't be anything to worry about (NOT virus, spyware or adware).

Python is one of the most powerful, easy-to-read programming languages around, but it does have its limitations. This general purpose, high-level language that can be extended and embedded is a smart option for many programming problems, but a poor solution to others.
