Never heard of fuzzy set.. but fuzzy logic is generally an extension of traditional logic.



Traditional logic in computers deals with true or false statements. example, Are you a male? Gets reduced to a yes or no question (apologize to any hermaphrodites that may be offended by that). Fuzzy logic deals with questions that are not so straight forward and allow some variables. For example, is it cold outsite? Depends on our systems. You could reduce that to a yes or no answer by hardcoding a limit, but you could use fuzzy logic to determine different answers beyond yes or no.

Fuzzy logic is like logic, but does not have absolute values or answers. Regular logic can always be reduced to boolean propositions. Fuzzy logic cannot, it is a form of logic where not all information is required and a best possible solution can be found with information that is available.



Fuzzy sets are used in fuzzy set theory. Fuzzy set theory is weird, it uses sets, much like set theory, but operations such as union or intersection are performed quite differently. A union between two sets is the maximal element in each set, and an intersection is the minimal element in each set.



I've used these concepts when designing some simple AI before, it doesn't seem like they should work, but they do achieve intelligent results despite the fact that they don't seem straighforward.
