How to I create sound using DirectSound from DirectX 9, using C++?

I have searched far and wide, and all samples and tutorials are far too complex for a beginner. From a book I was following, I had to include 10 files from the SDK that were only to be used in Unicode, and I am using Multi. So, is there a simple example of everything I will need to make DirectSound work in my program? It is the last thing I need to implement, and not even the professor of my course can help me, nor my tutor, due to inexperience with DirectSound.

DirectX wasn't designed with beginners in mind. If you have a book that is too advanced for you, and you can't wade your way through Microsoft's online references, then you might need to start out with a different library that's easier to use such as SDL. You might also want to try an intermediary library such as Allegro or XNA that handle some of the more tedious aspects of sound and graphics programming for you. After you learn the basics by working with these then you can take the next step by working with DirectSound or OpenAL.
