OpenOffice.org and Opening Files.?

I have been using OpenOffice.org for my word processing. However, recently OpenOffice.org has been doing something a little strange. When I save a file, which must be under word doc file, the document is saved. Later, when I go into the folder where the document is saved, I try to open the saved document. Clicking on the file takes me to a popup which asks me what I want to do; Open, Save As, or Cancel. I click upon the "Open" button, and it takes me to my desktop screen, and asks me to save the document. However, if I should open the OpenOffice software, and then from the click on File-Open-Document Name, I am able to open the document in question.

When I first downloaded OpenOffice.org I was able to open documents directly from the folder or from a website without first having to save it to either my desktop or document folder. Does anyone know a way to remedy this? It is not, really of any importance and save for this minor annoyance, everything works perfectly well.

Should the subject arise, the reason I am saving the documents in the microsoft word document file rather than the native openoffice document file is for my school. They use Microsoft Office, and I must use the document file. This is just to clarify the situation and to try to keep the comments as close to the actual subject as possible. Please do not take offence by this brief addition; i just felt the need to clarify.

Hi...

It's a shame i have not got open office installed any more ..

If the document in the folder appears transparent then you need to associate the file extension with the application in the open office program ...

ie Right click the file and select open with , select browse and click the correct application and have the "always open with " checked...

You also need to be care full when naming files that you do not inadvertently remove /re-name the extension..

If you have a continuing problem then i recommend you just install the program again..

Try right-clicking on a .doc file and go through the program selection to associate the file extension with the program needed to open it. Be sure to check the box that says to always use this program. Test it to see if OO opens normally when you try to open a .doc file directly.

certainly .rfile is plenty older than .odt / .odf and .odt / .odf are particularly open, in assessment to monstrosities created by Microsoft. That stated, Microsoft place of work additionally does help the open extensive-unfold (odt/odf), while iWorks/Pages does no longer. From iWorks/Pages you could save to the classic .rfile format that is examine by Libre place of work and then stored to an .odt format. Apple particularly would not such as you to apply different application or open standards, so as that they make it demanding for people to take action. Microsoft says they like people to apply open standards, yet as a substitute of adopting latest open standards (that are... nicely... standards), they make their own, so as that they are no longer certainly standards and commonly no longer that open the two. For relaxing, learn the size of the define of the 'open' format Microsoft created and the Open rfile format. Which one might you elect to learn as a programmer? The Open rfile format is extra and extra extra observed by online textual content cloth modifying equipment, which incorporate Google force and Quip. and because it particularly is now additionally obtainable in Microsoft place of work, it migt certainly grow to be a de facto extensive-unfold in some unspecified time interior the destiny. For now, i might say the genuine extensive-unfold continues to be rfile / docx, with all their go-platform incompatibility and closed format horrors firmly related.
