I want the base certification, but I don't want to pay for courses. Could I just buy the prep guide and learn on my own? Or are strong programming skills a necessary prerequisite? I need honest answers.

If it's doable, how should I teach myself?

Absolutely. I started learning programming mostly by myself, I had no formal training until a time when I'd already been programming for years. You have to start by picking a language, though. That decision should be based on a number of factors including: - what kinds of things you want to do - how steep you want the learning curve to be - what system environment you're working in It also helps a great deal if you have a readily available friend or relative who is already familiar with the language you're learning and can help you when you get stuck. If you don't, though, then you can always ask online. Be sure though when you ask online that you give adequate specifications of your problem; programming can be very finicky and often we can't tell what a problem actually is without a very precise description. Showing your code is usually a good idea.

it's possible, but won't be easy without programming experience

SAS is a very specific Language used for a special purpose:

The SAS language is a computer programming language used for statistical analyses, originated by a project at the North Carolina State University. It can read in data from common spreadsheets and databases and output the results of statistical analyses in tables, graphs, and as RTF, HTML and PDF documents. The SAS language runs under compilers that can be used on Microsoft Windows, Linux, and various other UNIX and mainframe computers.
