Browsing some internet career websites, I often find web designer and web developer are split as two separate and specialized roles.

I used to freelance building promotional websites for small businesses and did all work ranging from design to the required html and php web developing myself.
I have done lots of html from scratch, and also learned to adopt CMS or other pre-built scripts into my web design or vice-versa.

I am however, neither an expert graphic designer/artist, nor an a programmer.

What is the best "title" to describe my role on a resume?

I have the same situation, however there are loads of other people doing the same and their business listings and websites all say designer and developer.

I think it sounds better to say that you're a designer and developer so that's what I would put on your resume.

Hope it helps

Generally anyone would know you are a developer too, when you say Web designer. But better to both.

IMHO, a web designer is someone who designs the overall layout and style of a website (eg: HTML, CSS, Photoshop, etc.). A web developer is someone who does all of the front-end or back-end development (eg: PHP, Javascript, Python, Node.js, database, etc.).

I really wouldn't say you are either. Perhaps "Web Strategist" or "Project Manager" or something along those lines. Those types of titles seem more managerial anyway, which I would assume may help you - depending on the type of job you are applying for.

I call them "Mediocre Amateurs". You cannot be good at both "graphics" (which is "art" and use for left brained persons) and "programming" (which is "logic" and requires right brained persons).

You can be good at one OR the other. You will be mediocre at BOTH.

I am great at programming in any language, but less than mediocre at arts!
