Yes indeed there is the UNIX platform.

Of particular note is FreeBSD http://www.freebsd.org/

I am quite new to FreeBSD but of what I have seen so far its impressive.

Check out FreeOS.Com:

I'd suggest something like OpenBSD or FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenSolaris or PC-BSD.

But why not use Linux? I've considered checking out some of those BSD's and other myself, but don't plan to use them as my main OS, unlike Linux. The narrower the user base an OS has, the narrower the scope of programs and software for it.

FreeBSD, NetBSD and OpenBSD are based upon BSD-Unix.

OpenSolaris is a free version of Solaris from SUN (also a Unix).

Minix and Hurd are Unix-clones with microkernels.

Plan 9 and Inferno.

FreeDos, a DOS clone; and ReactOS which is meant to be WinNT compatiable.

Haiku is a BeOS-clone.

There are also several other home-brewed OS; often inspired by what was run on defunct hardware -- like clones for the OSes on Amiga and Atari.

You have several commercial Unix-OS; like AIX from IBM.

I don't know wheter it's free tho.

But why not linux ?? It's the easiest OS you can use if you migrate from Windows

Well I don't believe you will find another free OS that will work much better than the new Ubuntu 8.10. Its full GUI and wont stress you much in terms of viruses and such.
