I need to make a small brochure/pamphlet (one like an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper folded in three) for a small business. I was going to use GIMP because I will need to have the background be pictures with text on top of it. I'm used to using photoshop but I don't have it on this computer so I needed something that I could get quickly. I also want to know if there was a tool that allowed to to select the entire layer/picture and move it (if you know what I mean by that).

Thank you!

GIMP is NOT realy designed to create brochure or business card or other printing files. Try this

Yes, it is possible to make a brochure in GIMP or Photoshop. Really though, a photo editing program isn't the real professional way to make something like a brochure. What you need is a vector based page layout program, such as InDesign. With a page layout program you can create nice forms that can be scaled up to any size after you've created a form, and also you can more easily change parts of the form. You would use a photo editing program just to alter the photos you put in the form. I've never tried it, but there is an open source program called Scribus that you can download to do page layout.

I have read the comments. I don't want to have several programs to do simple things I did in Photoshop. I need to add text to pictures in various fonts in several layers i.e. a book title, author name, description of book then add a bar code etc. I then need to save it as a pdf for the publisher and make smaller jpg versions for my website. Can I do that in Gimp? A new Photoshop program is around £1,000 and I am now retired and this is just hobby stuff these days, but still needs to look good. If I move to Windows 8 or Mac my Photoshop 6 will no longer work so the answer is critical to my decision making. My current Windows 7 machine is getting old.

Yes. It is possible. GIMP has most of the basic tools in Photoshop, just that maybe you need a little familiarizing. I have been using both of them and I think it's quite okay. Maybe you want to go to GIMP's website and read more? :D
