multi user blog system?

im new to wordpress and was looking for some guidance.

this is for a product review based site so im looking to have a system that is similar to a forum but in a blog like manner.

i need to be able to create a specific list of categories, and then i want people to be able to register with my site and make a blog post that they select which category it belongs to.

can wordpress do this? if so how?
if not then do you know of anything that i could use to accomplish this?

As to how to do it, it would take a 30 page document to give you step by step instructions. You'll need to install it and play around with it.

Yes wordpress can do that but if you want to have more control with the features, I suggest you use drupal. It has user profile modules. You can also use joomla, but I'm just a drupal fan hehehe. :)
