Question:
Web Hosting & Email - SMTP?
Philosophical One

I've been looking through the web hosting services and am divided on POWWEB, Go Daddy, and Host Monster.

I was just about to go with Host Monster, however, I found out that Host Monster does not offer SMTP. What exactly does this mean? In doing this search, I am looking for a email service that will offer me convenient ways to send and receive messages through the computer and/or PDA. Does SMTP affect this?

Thanking You in Advance!

Hostmonster does, of course, have SMTP.

It's on a standard TCP port 25, so you'll have no trouble setting it up, and it works great with all software like Microsoft Mail/Outlook or any email client on a computer, PDA, or a mobile phone.

SMTP would be be an outgoing mai protocoll. It's one of the more popular protocols for sending out e-mail. No SMTP would make things much more difficult/impossible. Find a host that supports SMTP/POP3 access to mail inbox, as that's what 99% of clients work with.

Dreamhost is pretty good. And if you search you can get a coupon for $90 off one year's registration. So you pay $10 for a years worth of hosting.

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is different then "Web Mail" webmail services include hotmail, gmail, yahoo mail... any email that you log into a website to check... Are you familiar with Microsoft Outlook email client? or Outlook Express? Or.. on vista I believe its Windows Mail? That is a SMTP mail client, it differs from web mail in that you have to provide the server addresses into the email client software to configure it. if you want your own email address "you@youraddress.com" SMTP would be a must! Unless you can get them to forward your email to a webmail address like hotmail.. hope this helps

I wouldn't consider missing out on SMTP features..

I suggest you have a look at http://www.hosting24.com they give you a domain name for free and come with unlimited webspace, data transfer and basically no restrictions on SMTP and you can go with them on a monthly basis with full money back guarantee.. (Dont go with someone then regret it!!)

Also when you sign up with them if you enter in a discount code they will give you 25% off their ridiculously cheap hosting plan, code to use is 25OFF

I host all my sites there and have been more than pleased with their help and support which is available by phone support, I hope this helps
