Question:
Why is Ubuntu so ugly?

Brown and orange? No thanks, I'll pass. A desktop OS should be a work of art. Take a look at OS X or Windows 7. If you OpenSource guys ever want to compete with commercial software, get a better design team.

That Brown and Orange thing you speak of is called Gnome. It's a desktop environment.

Gnome is only one of the wide options you have as a desktop environment for Linux distributions.

Take a look at KDE and some others that exist.

Also, thing about it is that you can change anything you want to if.. You have the knowledge to.

Though if you went to Ubuntu (or any other Linux distribution) for "looks", then you're doing it wrong.

If you don't like the look, then use another theme... several are included, and more can be downloaded. You can of course also change the background image.

If it still doesn't rock your boat, try another Desktop Environment (KDE or XFce instead of GNOME) or another WindowManager (enlightenment (really beautiful), afterstep, wmaker, icewm, fvwm, ...)... try doing *that* in Windows. Since GNOME use an external WindowManager anyway (unlike KDE, which has one buildt-in), setting GNOME up to use another WM, will change how windows and buttons are drawn.

Personally I've always liked KDE better than GNOME... and in Linux -- unlike in Windows -- you have a real choice. Kubuntu is a version of Ubuntu that uses KDE by default.

You can't change the colour scheme?

Well really, Ubuntu is pretty damn good considering it does what the other OS's do, but for free! Looks are just a personal taste.

Also, they're probably more about making a really good OS, rather than making it look pretty. Something Windows should have done with Vista.

I, as a Linux advocate, am forced to agree.

There should be a greater selection of desktop/gui

styles to choose from, at install time.

However, you can change the desktop themes,

and they are easy to download and use.

What we have to remember is that Linux was

created to be simple and lightweight in the

processing department. Some extravagances

must be obtained by the user.

Ubuntu is the distribution.

Gnome is the desktop environment, which you probably are referring to.

If you don't like it, then customize it to suit your own needs. Simple as that. Nobody is forcing you to use the default themes.

Or use Kubuntu - it has KDE as a default desktop environment instead of Gnome. KDE looks damn cool.

Try Linux Mint if you want to use Linux it looks decent - http://www.linuxmint.com/, I agree that Linux doesn't look as good as Mac or Windows though :P.

That's because people who use Ubuntu don't care about looks, it's for highly advanced power users. It might look humble and crap to you but there's a whole lot more you can do with it.

Go with Kubuntu, I like it more than Ubuntu.

People who run linux generally dont care about looks, they care about performance.

Its open source. They can only afford to employ volunteers or minimum wage designers. That's why they look cheap...
