Using Visio to Create a Site Map?

I want to create a site map of the site I'm creating. I haven't put any pages together and want to layout the data in a sitemap before doing so. I was planning to use Visio but can't figure out the best way to do it. How do you use Visio to create a sitemap? Are there before products to do this?

If you are looking to create a map of your site as a guide for you while building it, Visio can be a good tool to use. You will basically be creating a flowchart or directory map of your site. While I know of no software that will do this for you, you can download plenty of templates from Microsoft that will give you a basic starting design. You can also use PowerPoint or Word 2007+, which have built-in flow chart and org chart templates that may serve your needs.



When actually putting together your sitemap guide, go for a "directory tree" layout, similar to that of your computer's directory structure. The top page will be your home page, then your category pages beneath that and subcategory pages in each of their respective top-level categories. While you will likely have header and footer links on every page that comprise your site's main navigation, you don't need to make a note of them in your map (because that would just be messy).



When you create a sitemap of you site to display on your site, Visio is not the tool to use. You always want the sitemap on your website to be comprised of clickable links. This way, your visitors can navigate your site from that page and the search engines can crawl it.

Surely God can handle the competition. So, what are you worried about? Your own doubts, right?
