Here is a review of the best free webhosting available right now:

http://www.hostimatic.com/category/free-hosting/

Its has no advertising, free ftp, free mysql and all the features you could possibly need for a startup website, and should also have a 99% uptime (so they say). This is as good as you will get otherwise you will have to pay.

See here for the best web hosts of 2008: http://www.hostimatic.com/shared-hosting-2008/

If you are wanting to try something out before you go full stream with it, go with the free hosting, you have nothing to lose. If you are looking to make money or offer a service from your website i would go with paid shared hosting, my personal favourite being bluehost.

You have to remember that with free hosting, you are limited in so many areas! I was looking for a free hosting company at one point and came across Heritage Web Solutions. The have been hosting my site for about a year at a very lost cost. They host my site along with providing me with many other features.

I really think free web hosting is a waste of time. You have to deal with ugly 3rd party banners and things like that all over your site. Kind of takes away the "your" in your site. You should consider going to a website like http://www.hostgumbo.com ... they have an up to date pricing and features comparison chart for the top 2009 web hosts. The site is free to use and they also run really cool promotions and giveaways. They will pay for the first 3 months of your hosting no matter which one of their advertised hosts you decide to use!

I think Angelfire is ok...

Their site-building tools have been largely disappointing in the past, but they recently updated their Web shell and made lots of improvements making it much easier to work with. =)

Piczo is really good, and easy to use except the name of your website ends up like "www.xxxxx.piczo.com wich isnt probably the best for a buisness or formal site. Hope this helpsp
