Hi, what´s the average size of a web page? please help!!!?

Question

I´m a graphic designer, but I don´t do any multimedia or web design. I have a client that wants me to design his bussiness webpage, so I am doing all the art work, and images... and a friend of mine is going to do the uploading and web design.
So my question is what size should I make the front page design? and what software do you suggest best?

There are two ways to answer your question.



First: It seems that you are talking about the size of your photoshop document (i.e. width x height). Nowadays the average computer user has at least an 800 (width) x 600 (height) pixel screen with about a 96 dpi screen resolution. Take into account the scrollbars and the sides of a window so deduct about 50px from the width. The height will be at least 100px smaller depending on how many menu bars the user has in their browser. The height doesn't matter as much because they can scroll, but still try to get your most important information in the initial screen size of the page.



Second: If you are talking about download size you probably want your initial page to be under 80kb (that is including the html and all images). Usually the smaller the better, however, in todays world high speed internet is becoming the norm so larger pages are becoming more acceptable.



For a dial up user a 80kb page will take 10-15 seconds to load. For a dsl or cable modem user is will be anywhere from 1-5 seconds.

If you're talking about the size of the index page (Home page), then smaller is better. Google has one of the smallest for a page as popular as they are. Some, such as Yahoo or MSN are much larger. I've seen some that are even worse. I'd agree with a previous poster...about 20k is fine. Depending on the target market and the variations on user connection capabilities, a little bigger might still be OK.



Dreamweaver works really well.

The average front (home) page size (personal opinion) *should* be about a screen's worth, and quick-to-load, so that the visitor gets text right away, and knows what the website is about, and is interested in staying and viewing other stuff on the website. Break pages into smaller quicker loading chunks instead of long groaning blobs. Remember that some poor folks are using dialup connections!

Honestly, it really depends on the content of the site (e.g. flash, graphics, etc...). Webpages really don't have a size per se, however you want to keep the content to a minimum to avoid slow download times otherwise you might lose your target audiance. A good program for webdesign is macromedia's dreamweaver, but there again it depends on what your client wants on their page. Good luck ; )

just stick to 600x800. that's the standard. Don't add, subtract, multiply, divide. Just do it at 600x800. It's perfectly fine if it's taller than 600 if you don't mind scrollbars on the front page, but keep it 800 wide for sure.
