Question:
I have a teaching web site that I use with my students, but I'm having a problem with hosting and NAT.?

I just began hosting my web site with http://www.nearlyfreespeech.net. My school district is behind a NAT gateway, which gives all of my student's laptops at school the same IP address. My students use about 30 laptops for access to my web site at a time, but http://www.nearlyfreespeech.net (I believe) only allows 10 simultaneous connections from one IP address at a time (see http://www.nearlyfreespeech.net/help/access_denied to see what I'm talking about).

I've tried to research and see if there are other inexpensive hosts like Nearly Free Speech that will function correctly with my teaching web site and for access from what "appears" to be a single IP address, when in reality my students are all using different laptops.

Does anyone know of a good, inexpensive host (I'm a teacher, so I obviously don't have a ton of $) that I can host my site with and that will help it to function with multiple connections from a NAT gateway. FYI: it will need php 5 (ideally) for my Wordpress blog.

I'd suggest Hostgator.com, they provide reliable server and good support, and after confirm with their sales, they have no limitation on the number of connections from the same IP (see below).

Jeff S.: Welcome to HostGator, how may I assist you?

John: hi

John: I am a teacher, and my students are under a NAT

John: So they will connect to my web site from the same ip.

John: How many concurrent connections from the same IP are allowed?

Jeff S.: let me see if there is a limit

Jeff S.: there is no limit

Jeff S.: from a single ip

John: Even if they will cause multiple mysql connection?

Jeff S.: no limit to the number of connections from a single ip .. it only makkers if they are slowing down the server... causing the cpu usage to go over the 25% barrier

Jeff S.: matters

John: Thanks

You might want to present your existing host with an argument... IP address limitations are an extremely poor security measure...

1) A huge number of users out there are behind proxy servers, sharing the same IP addresses. Can you say AOL?

2) An IP address is not a reliable way to identify ONE user for the same reason... because the giant ISP's using proxies will route requests to whichever proxy has the lightest load. Meaning the same user can have multiple IP's between page requests.

3) An IP address is not a secure, reliable way to identify a user even if it's NOT a proxy, because a hacker can fake an IP address.

Free web hosting providers are not reliable and usually slow in connection. Try to get a paid hosting to develop worry free websites.

Not sure what your budget is, but I use powweb.com for my hosting. Normally it's $7.77 a month (pre-paid a year), but I think they have a deal for $5.77 a month.

It allows for a ton of storage and bandwidth. I use less than 1% of each. It uses multiple versions of php, lets you create e-mail accounts with your domain, and a lot of other add-ons available either for free, one-time set up charge, or monthly fees.

If you go with it, tell them that llaffer.com referred you ,please. : ) Thanks.
