For a complete noob i recommend Turing, it is the most BASIC, its 1000 times easier to learn than Visual Basic.

Java and C#(C Sharp) are the best programming languages.I recommend C#. It is a very good programming language to learn and is also new.The basic development tools are free and easily available(Advanced programming tools are available at a price). You can develop and deploy amazing applications using C#.Some programming tasks that were manually used in older languages are automated in C#.You can use the video tutorials on Microsoft's official site or http://www.csharphelp.com/archives2/archive402.html

Visual Basic has all the power required for anything you would want to do and it is much easier to read when you come back to it later. C#, Java and C++ are far too abrupt for a new user and even after years of developing applications i still like the Visual Basic syntax despite what all the other 'religions'have to say.

It all depends what you are trying to program for. If you want to program for computers, an easy language to start off with is Visual Basic. Some of the more complex ones are C++ and Java. If you want program for the Internet, there is PHP, ASP.NET, Perl, and Javascript. A good resource to start web programming is http://www.w3schools.com/. Take a look at the server scripting portion. it will give you a glimps of some of the different languages used today on the web. As for learning Visual Basic, I found this doing a quick search, and it is a decent little tutorial. http://www.profsr.com/vb/vbintro.htm
Good luck!

Try assembler, you will end up with very tight and fast code.
You will also learn a bit more about how computers compute.
