Hit Shift + C to select the Crop Tool, outline what it is you would like to crop, and click inside your selection.

If you want freedom to crop any sized square, click Fixed, but select 'Aspect Ratio' instead of 'Size'. Make sure the colon separated numbers below that are equal (of course).

Here is the GIMP Docs: http://docs.gimp.org/2.6/en/

when you crop a picture or do anything to it in gimp, a text box will appear. you can either enter your data in the text box (ie. 50% smaller to the left or whatever it is), or you can do like what you do, and proly everyone else, and just click and drag.

but after you are done, you have to find the textbox (probably called resize or something like that) and then hit enter/ok/what ever it says

I just select the area I want to crop to with the rectangle select, then in the toolbar go to Image (or layer) ==> Crop to Selection.

Another way is to go to Image ==> Canvas Size and set an offset to where you want it with the new size.
