How to make a chatroom?

How can I make a new chatroom myself?
Are there any proper sites to use?
I would like to make a chatroom similar to habbohotel.com
Help?

Any chatroom requires some serious programming skills, ie javascript, php, mysql and AJAX, that is: a local script, a server-side script, a database and interactive partial screen refresh.

You can google "free chatroom scripts", and you will find many of them.

However, adapting them to your needs is another matter!

I shall do one in the "table v div challenge" on www.web2coders.com. You will be able to download the source.

one way is the oldest way on the internet, IRC. You can use one of the free irc servers out there then put a java irc client on your website. Then your clients can chat with either your website or an irc client like xchat/chatzilla/mirc. And there are irc clients on every operating system.



Another way would be a CGI/HTML chat setup on a website. Alot of these are easy to find on websites dealing with tools for website administrators. Often times you need to run a chat server of sorts on a machine like irc, but not always. If you want a site with video conferencing and voice, you will most likely have to pay quite a bit for that setup as there is no free way to set that up that I know of yet. Company's pay good money for services like that or usally do all the coding themselves with a large team (like yahoo and blogtv and all that). Good luck.

You also will see an option on the MEEBO page for creating a chat room.



I have created three so far and you get the EMBED code to post on your blog or website. As the creator of the chat room, logging into it from the MEEBO homepage or from the site you placed it on.
