Any major distro is going to be about the same in that respect, they all use the same basic core components. I'd stick with a major, well supported one like Debian, CentOS, OpenSuse, etc. CentOS is a clone of RedHat Enterprise and is rock solid.

And to the guy below, Solaris is not Linux.

Ever Linux can do just about exactly the same thing as any other Linux. Solaris is Unix Based, but Open Solaris uses Linux files. Centos is one Distribution recommended for Servers but it is not the only one. Linux is nothing but a Kernel, it is not an operating systems. The files that connect with the Kernel is what makes an operating system. The Linux Kernel can't do any thing by itself because it is only a file.

IBM has used Unix for many years for their Main Frame Computers and Servers. That has been changing over the years more toward Linux based systems for Servers. As long as you have the support in the Linux you use for a Unix System or Unix like system there should be no reason to go with a specific Linux Distribution. If Unix based with Linux support, you would choose some thing like PCBSD 7. Every Linux will do exactly what you are asking about if the correct files are installed.

If this is going to be all server related you would find the Linux Distributions that are directed toward Servers because those would be most likely set up in this way and not set up toward Home Desktop or Laptop Computers users . The files in the Distribution would be more specific for the intent of the Linux. Personally I never say one is better than another because this is all only a persons personal preference and choice. I would probably go with Slackware because it has been around for a long time, just like Debian which is very stable because not very much ever changes with this distribution, But I wouldn't consider it for server purposes. That is my choice and opinion only.

I apologize if I tend to be long Winded but I just can't give short answers.

think of Unix, it extremely is been around for an extremely long term, long till now Microsoft and homestead windows each existed. it continues for use heavily by using companies, firms and the government. those roots will on no account flow away. Linux is a Kernel, no longer an working equipment and it extremely is roots have been additionally off of Unix. You get blind sided by using the term Open source and that's comprehensible, everyone has unfastened get entry to to the source codes, can regulate, replace, alter and recreate the source archives to something new and greater effective, that's shared between everyone and what you create may well be bought. builders could tend to jot down commercial application to generate an income and additionally you purchase it merely the comparable as you do homestead windows application. Many Linux distributions have roots with Debain Linux. Ubuntu has a sturdy foot in the door and that i in my view do no longer think of you may desire to be annoying approximately 5, ten or two decades from now, it ought to alter names, besides the incontrovertible fact that it extremely is going to nonetheless be Linux and that all of them merely approximately use precisely the comparable base record equipment and archives. that's a commonality that homestead windows would not have.
