It's exactly the same except for the name. Strange, but true.

Java is made by Sun Microsystems and VB is made by Microsoft. VB is "basic"..it is powerful and stil the most popular programming language because of its ease and power to make stand-alone applications on the Windows platform.
Java is platform-independent which means it can be run on all kinds of computer systems (not just Windows). Java was based on the C++ language and so their programming syntax differs greatly from VB and looks more on par with C/C++/Php and other modern languages. Java is also a Object-Oriented language and VB (version 6 and downard) are not (well they are pseudo-oo).
Java is slower to run on Windows-based machines because it is an interpreted language (i am sure they have gotten better and so my knowledge prolly needs updating on this).
Java is very popular outside the Windows realm (especially on Mobile phones). It use to be widely used on the internet before Flash tookover (speed and special effects and quick creation is what doomed java).
Overall, both languages have strengths but in todays times it is best to learn more C style languages such as C#, PHP, etc since VB is starting to loose steam to these other very OO style languages.
Honestly i would never use Java..i prefer C# and use to be a VB hardcore user

they r totally different
Besides syntax:
Java is platform independent.
Visual Basic isn't platform independent, but their is a version of it on Linux/Mac as part of the Mono project.
VB is developed by Microsoft for use on their own OS, and Java is developed by Sun and is cross-compatible with different OSs.
