Question:
In the near future will we be building web sites by writing HTML, CSS, etc. or will we mainly be using a CMS?
?

It seems like building a site with HTML, CSS, and maybe some JavaScript is a static way of building a site, especially if a client needs the developer to continually update the site. Having said that, does that mean that Content Management Systems like Joomla! will be the main way to build a web site for a client (so they can update their site themselves)?

Yes like Chris said. CMS will only go so far. If your working in Web then you will still have to know HTML and CSS for years to come.

Is you want to make any database driven sites and pixel perfect designs a CMS will limit your options and it will be easier to custom build your site from scratch.

If a site does not have its content updates frequently then there is No point in sending time or money on implementing a CMS.

If users of a CMS want to do some fancy layouts they will still need to know HTML and CSS to accomplish this.

However for simple content sites or sites that update their content regularly especially on internal Intranet then yes a CMS would be the best solution.

Either way you will need to know all three things to be successful at developing websites, as pretty much all web development companies offer CMS options with the packages.

A CMS won't make up for the precise details some users will want on their site. CMS's are just used to make things organized and easy for the user. Since when has Joomla! or a similar program created accurate and simple back-end programming? CMS doesn't cover all of it. HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP... they will be around for a while yet.

Microsoft is the spoiler in the web page game. Microsoft is doing everything they can to alter W3.org recommendations. Because of MS, we can't move forward because CEO Balmer is in a quandary trying to figure out how to maintain market share.

xml should have been the data format by now, MS wants to re-invent xml.

America recently revised their copyright law. Recent television content is not available outside the boundaries of the USA. As modern movies get produced, the new copyright law should have further impact.

So, the big picture is: CMS for web delivery, to accommodate how wealth will be distributed.
