What should I do? My iMac is version 10.5.8 and the book I'm reading stated that Xcode should be on all iMacs.

An older version of XCode should be on the optical disk that has Mac OS X on it. You're running an older version of Mac OS X, 10.5.8, which is out-of-date for developing serious apps for Mac and/or iOS, but you could get it working if you want to just fool around with XCode and Objective-C.

The answerer that said that you should upgrade to Mountain Lion is correct. Running the latest OS, gives you access to the latest version of XCode which is essential for serious development for Mac and for iOS. Try to upgrade to Mountain Lion. If your processor is too old to run Mountain Lion, then you may want to buy a newer Mac on ebay, or just use the older version of XCode to fool around with it.

If you upgrade your iMac to version 10.6.6, also known as Mac OS X Mountain Lion, which costs $19.99, you should then have the Mac App Store, which will enable you to download Xcode for free.

Below is a link to more information about Mac OS X 10.6.6 Mountain Lion, which you may want to check out.

Additionally, below is a link to a page on the Apple website about Xcode 4, which you may find helpful.

Best of luck and I hope I helped you!

You can download Xcode from the "App Store" on your iMac, free of charge. It's just not preloaded because so few consumers use it.

You should download it.
