Question:
How do I create a Web Site?
2010-07-13 14:17:52 UTC
I want to make a web site and somebody told me you have to pay to make one. But I really don't think that's true. Somebody told me to use a web site called freewebs.com but I want it to be a 'real' web site, completely independent. So how do I create a website and can I do anything like have people able to create accounts or is that the kind of thing that needs money? Also would I have people to post things on it (does that need money) and how would I know if a web address is taken?

1. You need to purchase a domain name, (this costs $$$)

2. You need to either host it yourself or get a hosting provider (I recommend XTREEMHOST)

3. You need either two DNS Servers, or to point your domain name to your hosting provider's DNS Servers.

If you chose to host it yourself, you'll need a web server, I recommend Apache, if you have a lot of money and want to buy a Windows Server 2008 License, then Win2k8 Server is for you.

If you wanted to create a real site, the real steps as below;

1. You have to buy a domain coz the money for the domain registration ownership, the contract from 1 yr to 10 yrs. http://www.lovelyapple.com/WhyNeedDomain.html

2. You should have a software of website builder that no limitation of how many pages you create, you can also put many web tools as music, video player, web form, slide show...etc with the HTML & JavaScript editor. http://www.coffeecup.com/designer/

3. Get an appropriate hosting of Windows or Linux, you can have emails, sub-domains, FTP, MySQL...with it. http://www.securepaynet.net/Hosting/Legacy.aspx?ci=1783&prog_id=LovelyApple

4. Because these all of your own, therefore you can make your site Meta Tag & Sitemap to enhance SEO submission.

However, If you were a newbie or even not really have enough money, you can try Google Site. It's free and durable. You can forwards your domain to indicate page URL. For the free site, it provides some designed templates, tables, HTML JavaScript....http://sites.google.com/

Just one thing you can't create your SEO but try it for an experiment before you make a decision.

to create a site with your name www.yourname.com or www.somehting.com you must pay, that is correct.

there are hosts where you pay a small yearly fee, like http://www.visionhost.info

as for creating a web site where people can post things, this requires programming so it's not very easy. Instead, for a basic website where YOU write the content, a normal easy web software such as http://www.easywebeditor.com is good and more than ok; technicians use usually dreamweaver but that's complex...

You can create a website using software such as Adobe Dreamweaver/Microsoft Office Frontpage or other WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) web design software.

You can use websites like Google Sites (need gmail account) for free to create a website without knowing HTML or using the before-mentioned software. But in order to have your name on site instead of the designated name on site (e.g: www.rose.com instead of www.rose.freewebs.com), you have to buy the name (domain name).

It's easy process if you put ur site in GoDaddy.com. They will help you get the domain name you want for some fee.

Another process that you might be interested in is a blog. You can create a website in like blogger.com or wordpress.com and also have an instant running blog. I believe it's also easy to have your own domain name instead of the one given by them. But you do have to pay for the domain name.

Domain names aren't free unless you put your site on a website already created (eg.: rose.freewebs.com or rose.blogpsot.com etc).

Good luck!

To do all that you have mentioned, you'll probably need a blog. There are some FREE blogging sites available.

As far as being "completely independent" AND Free --> Don't know if there are any out there like that. You'll probably have to buy a domain for that..

Here are a few FREE blogging sites though. They also host your site.....

http://blog.com/

– Offers free blog hosting with unlimited bandwidth for their free package, more benefits for paid members.

http://www.blogyx.com/

– Blogging site with extras such as chat boxes so you can interact with your readers.

https://www.blogger.com/

– A great starting site to get a taste of blogging, very easy to use.

http://wordpress.com/

– Not only can you install WordPress on your own sites, you can use the same software on their site and save yourself all of the technical work.

if you want a Real website without knowledge of coding and stuff, i highly suggest wordpress.com and wordpress.org, setup a free blog, and choose from the hundreds of cool free "themes" to make your site look cool.

if you want to be more advanced and have better control over the look and feel of your site, you should look for Dreamweaver tutorials, maybe from lynda.com and then basic HTML tutorials, if you ever want to get into the web world, you have to have a simple understanding of HTML before you can go anywhere.

There's several things to note about your question. First all you need to create a website is a pc, but to get others to see it you'll need to host it, either on your own server or (better) through a webhost.

The reason i say a webhost is better is that for a beginner to use his own pc will require a lot of learning and a pc that is always on.

Next, it depends what kind of web site you wish to build, a simple personal site could be made with a free web design programme, or by using templates.

Here is what i suggest as you are obviously an absoloute beginner:

Start with a free hosting account from byet internet, the reason is that it is as near to proffesional as you can get for free and is full featured, so will provide you many ways of creating a site or sites while learning. http://byethost.com/index.php/free-hosting

Now, the username you choose upon sign up will also be your domain name, so for example you choose the username 'robert' your first domain is www.robert.0lx.net

You will also be sent details of your control panel log in, which will use a different username that they will mail you, plus the password you chose at sign up.

First, check your site is visible by going to your domain name, then log into your control panel.

Inside, you will see several different links for different options.

(This is typical of all web hosting panels)

You can choose to create a new domain name if you own one, you can either buy a .com for example or use a free one from http://www.co.cc.

Once you have created a domain name with any provider, you will need to point it to your hosting.

In the control panel, select add on domains, then enter the name of the domain you have created. It will tell you which nameservers to use, something like ns1.0lx.net and ns2.0lx.net

Then go to the site you created the domain with and log in, set the nameservers, then wait sometimes upto 48 hours for worldwide propogation.

Whilst waiting, you can get used to using your hosting by using the site you already have.

In control panel there are many features. The filemanager is for uploading your own sites if you have any, to get used to it, click filemanager, click htdocs, you will see index.html, delete it, then go to your homepage in a new browser tab. You'll notice the homepage has gone!

Now go back to your control panel and you will see a link for a free web builder, click and follow instructions!

Once you've played with that one, you could create a subdomain, then again in filemanager under the web builder link, you will see the fantastico installer link. Click that, view some of the sites available, choose one then follow instructions to install you own forum or blog or shop etc!

On one hosting account from byet you could host upto 6 add on and 6 sub domains, plus you could have a web site linking to a forum both on just one site.

Once you've got accustomed to byets hosting, you should be ready to upgrade to paid hosting and byet start at around 3 dollars per month (About 1.50 pounds).

Note though that byets free hsoting is supplemented by placing ads on your control panel log in, and sometimes on your site, and an easy way around this is to sign up for one of their free re-seller accounts, which gives you the same hosting but also gives you a separate website to give away free hosting to others, and you put your ads on. Then, you sign up to one of your own sites and take the ads off! Have as many sites as you like for nothing, but get used to one site first!
