Problem with 'run' tool on Windows XP?

I have had a problem with some missing folders, Folder Options in the control panel has disappeared and I have been reading that the way to get it back starts with typing 'regedit' into the run tool on the start menu. However a message appears telling me that this has been disabled by the administrator when it is a home computer and the only person to use this is me.

I think I may have a virus which is causing this, if so. do you have any suggestions on how I could fix this. I have tried software that detects and deletes malware but this hasn't helped. Thanks.

Download superantipsyware portable - free here

http://www.superantispyware.com/portablescanner.html

double click to run - it doesn't install anything - run a scan and quarantine all found infections

after scanning, open preferences and select "repairs"

highlight "enable startmenu run" and click perform repair

do the same for "enable control panel" and "enable windows explorer folder options"

try to open Group Policy Editor

Go To START MENU ---> RUN ---> type : gpedit.msc

Expand User Configuration-->Administrative Templates-->Windows Components

Click on Windows Explorer

now n the right double click on REMOVES THE FOLDER OPTIONS MENU ITEM FROM THE TOOLS MENU

Mark enable

restart ur PC

now do all the steps again but mark disable

check if u can find folder option on control panel

if this not work with u means u may have virus and u need to scan ur system from viruses using good virus scan program

Try to go to http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/WelcomePage.asp

then click "Continue to Symantec Security Check" on the following page click on the start button under Virus Detection. It will scan you system for a virus.

Once you know if you do have a virus on your PC, you can use Google search to find a removal tool/program for the virus.
