actually u have got two different scenarios...for learning purpose sql server 2000 is the best option because it involves lot of codes which help you learn the queries...But, for exam purpose i mean certification u have to use sql server2005...because no certification exists for sql server 2000 and even if it exists, you need to appear for a migration exam/upgrade exam...and its the most widely used and has got enhanced features with excellent gui's

In SQL mainly you need to learn quries and other theorotical parts of the Data Base management System....

So for practice purpose you may use SQL 2000

there is no harm in using it and will not cause any problem in understanding the other version...

Some functionalities may be given in the later version I have not used 2005 or any other ...

But the quierys will remain the same.. .some functionalities and the steps of executing the queiers and creating the tables and database will differ in the other version but u can cop up with some R &D

SO you can Go with SQL 2000
