My wife and I want to host and build our own website from home. We are not looking to start the next amazon, we just want to get into it and don't want to use google or other hosting. I have an old desktop that I want to build into a server. Any advice or links to online guides would be appreciated. Preference for a windows platform but I'm also open to linux (don't really know that much about it).

SLAMPP is a ready-built and ready-configured completely free bootable webserver on a CD.

1. Download it from here http://slampp.abangadek.com/info/

2. Burn it to CD

3. Boot your old desktop with the CD

4. Play about, learn. Decide if you like it.

5. Install from CD onto your old desktop

6. Insert your website code into /var/www/htdocs

7. Open a path through your router to the old desktop

8. Buy/scrounge a dynamic DNS service (for instance from no-ip.com, and there's others)

9. Install the little updater client program that keeps your dynamic address correct

10. PROFIT???

11. Follow the instructions at http://slampp.abangadek.com/info/ on how to make it more secure (change the root password for instance)

There are many websites out there to use but there are a few good ones I have used like weebly is ok and can make websites to a certain extent but the other website is Adobe dreamweaver, this one costs, I am not sure how much but is used by everyone from amateur to professionals. This can be used to make advanced websites that look professional like amazon and eBay. To start with it is different and can take a while to get to know where everything is but with a couple of YouTube videos and some blogs you should be ready to go and make a website that will be informative and useful to anyone visiting.

If you don't need a database then if you have a windows machine then just instaĺl iis on your machine if you dont have it installed. It will create a directory on your c: drive inetpub. Re you will find a folder wwwroot. Just place your files in there for your website.

Next you will need to find your ip address for your external location. And the IP of your machine. You will need to port forward your router for port 80 to your internal IP.

Use your external IP address to access your site. Unfortunately your ISP will keep changing your external IP so you will need to keep checking it and using the new IP. If your router has a dynamic dns service update feature use this and you will then be able to use the name provided by the ddns service.

Honestly it is just way eaasier to get a proper hosting account with a real domain name. There is just way less hassle. Our hosting plans start for as little as $5 month and will giove you email as well as many other features

If you need any assistance please let us know.

To host your site:

You need a server, you should really use linux for it as it's simple and easy to manage/use. Install packages like PHP etc.

To build your site:

Just get a developer to do it unless you wanna learn HTML, CSS, JS, PHP etc.

I wouldn't host it from your house, you'd get better and faster uptime using a dedicated VPS or server.

If you want to create your own website, you can use a free drag-and-drop website builder such as ImCreator.com. It's one of the top-rated website builders out there so you should go check it out, :D
