Is it possible to have a web portal where users can play chess against a computer? Rather than downloading a chess software, user merely can go to a web site and play against the software. I'm worried that since chess software uses a lot of processing power due to the complexity of the game, the application server won't be able to handle too many player playing at the same time.

Again, I'm not talking about a site where player plays chess against each other, but all against the software. Any site like this exist? Is it possible with today's processing power? Thanks

Absolutely. This has been possible for many years.

Well, it might be possible to offload a considerable amount of the processing work to the user's computer. That would save on resources. In any case, chess programs are good enough now that even a relatively small amount of processing power is adequate to beat all but the best amateur human players.

Sure it's possible. You could make a flash game like that, or even in java. The algorithms for programming the computer side are quite complex, if you want to make the computer smart.

http://www.chess.com/play/computer.html is website. I'm sure there are more if you google it.
