Google and download the program called "mathtype": it is a free editor that allows you to type mathematical expressions.

Once installed, it attaches itself to Words.

Great little add-on!

It depends on which version of word you are using. If you are using word 2007, it is located in the insert tab on the top. After clicking insert, click equations and you will see add new equations on the box that appears.



Only word 2007 has it.
