Which is the best php ide?

Check out the zend Studio, which is created by the creator of PHP.

It's better than Eclipse, because it's designed for PHP not for Java with add-on. If you are serious PHP coder like me, you will love it.

It's not free, but my company pay for it. :-)

The answer to this question depends on a variety of factors.

-What is your os?

-What is your development environment?

-What is your budget?

The first thing to know is that there are a *lot* of editors out there. The prior responses mentioned two of the big ones: eclipse vs. Zend. What they both have in common is that they are written in java. While Zend does have their own environment, which is entirely focused on PHP, they also are contributing to the php specific extensions to eclipse.

Let me clarify 2 misconceptions from the prior responses. First, Zend is not as stated, the people who made PHP. PHP is a collaboration of people. Zend is certainly a hub of PHP, as they contributed the php compiler, and as a company have been the closest thing to a "foundation" that php has. They're part advocacy, consultancy, figure heads (the Zend name was derived from the two main contributors to the zend engine, Zev and Andi) product company, and project leads. With that said, while they have been major contributors to PHP, there is a substantial group of people who helped make PHP what it is, that have nothing to do with Zend.

I state this, because Zend is certainly not the only game in town, and have no competitive advantages in terms of contributing an IDE for PHP. The same things that are in the Zend IDE are in other IDE's and editors.

The 2nd comment that denigrated Eclipse is the very thing that makes it strong -- mainly that it is *not* just a php IDE. It's more general purpose, and for that reason has some real advantages that the Zend guys have freely admitted. The first is that Eclipse has plugins for lots of different languages, project types and files. It started as a java centric ide, but it offers support for a lot of different languages, including PHP. The plugin/extension I used it for is called phpeclipse, and it adds the same sorts of php specific stuff that Zend has. Zend does have some nicer features, but nothing that I found I couldn't live without, or that warranted a 300+ expenditure on my part.

On the flipside, Eclipse does some things much better than Zend, first and foremost, in its integration with cvs and subversion. As a pro, using a source code management system is pretty important. Zend has it too, but in a much more barebones, non-integrated fashion, last I looked.

I'd suggest you try eclipse with phpeclipse and see if it meets your needs. If however, you are writing php day in day out in order to make a living, and the price of the editor is not a major factor for you, evaluate Zend too. Eventually one or the other will emerge for you as your choice.

And just in case you want more options, look at the link I provided -- an entire site about the many options for developing your php code.

As for dreamweaver, it's really a wysiwig tool.

For php I've allways used Macromedia Dreamweaver but it isn't free I think the latest version is around $400 USD so maybe it isn't what you're looking for.

I have never used Eclipse but I've heard it's quite good.

you need to use NetBeans for Hypertext Preprocessor (if I keep in mind properly), yet in addition Aptana Studio, that's based on the Eclipse IDE (in case you have ever used that). for my section, i might advise getting faraway from IDEs completely in case you intend on doing diverse programming on the internet, simply by fact javascript, for occasion, would not have an IDE, and actually, you're able to do in spite of you need to in a solid text cloth editor (Notepad++, or gedit, or god help us all: vim/emacs).

For which operating system? And what is your definition of the "best"? Do you require code completion? language help? local debugging? remote debugging? Do you want it to be lightweight or feature-rich? Does price matter?
