Your browser's encoding may have been changed if you were able to see the characters before. You have to have the correct character encoding set for the browser and a font set that contains the characters needed. Sometimes the detection is set on auto, but may not work detecting correct language on all pages as web pages should tell the browser what to use. UTF-8 is a good start. Firefox's changes from the View menu.

Did your computer display the Chinese words in the past (you used the phrase 'change it back')?

In which computer application are you viewing the replacements? Some applications support different character sets (such as Katakana for Japanese).

Do you have a Chinese-capable keyboard attached to the computer? If not, where did you find a document containing Chinese words?

Which Chinese dialect do you know? There are at least Mandarin and Cantonese.

Is the text pure Chinese or an English text with Chinese examples?

Change your font back to Mingliu for traditional Chinese, Simsun for simplified.
