VMWare player would work fine, then you could grab an image with a compiler and go to town.

You can also use VMWare Player and get a "blank" image, which you can then use to use the installation disk of a linux distro to install Linux and a compiler.

to easily create your own images, you can use VMWare Server

Just use VMWare Server. It's a free download from VMWare's website and it will let you create vm's as well as run them.

http://www.vmware.com/download/server/

I would recommend the 1.0.7 version until they get a few things fixed in version 2.0.

I hope this helps.

You should get VMware Player free then you can either have someone make you an image if they have VMware Workstation or you can download it at http://www.vmware.com/appliances/ that way you don't have to pay for any of it.
