1- There is not any big difference among extensions, but .com is the most popular.

2- Don't use Godaddy as your web hosting service, because some people have some problems with their web hosting services. Godaddy is only a good place for registering domain names.

3- Don't trust dishonest claims like "Best web hosting only $1 /month" or "Get the cheapest web hosting without sacrificing quality and features!!". Take into consideration that some hosting companies are cheating and lying to their customers. It is very important that your service be uptime (functioning and available for use) . It means you can access your account whenever you want to update your web pages, and users can enter your website whenever they refer to your site address. If your hosting service is not uptime it can be catastrophic!

4- All websites today currently run on either a Windows web server or a Linux-based server. The vast majority of websites run on a Linux-based platform as Linux has a strong reputation for security and web server performance. With standard (static) HTML-based websites, the web hosting platform doesn't make much difference. When it does make a difference, however, is when the website uses a dynamic scripting technology such as ASP (A Microsoft based technology), or PHP / PERL (Linux based technologies). A Windows-based hosting solution will run a Microsoft Windows server with IIS (Internet Information Server), and is necessary to run an ASP / ASP.NET scripted website. A Linux-based platform is typically used for PHP, Perl, and most other types of websites. Basically, unless your website uses ASP (pages ending in the .asp extention), Windows hosting is not necessary.

5- Take into consideration that web hosting is a global service. It does not matter what country you are located in; US, UK, Canada, Australia or India. It is good to note that the cost of hosting services in most countries is generally a little more expensive in comparison to the same services in Canada and the United States. Specifically, American web hosts offer a much better value for money than any local hosting.

6- As you may know a domain name is just a name, not a real website. If you are going to create your website: 1- Buy a domain name. A domain name is a name you want to call your website (ex: www.yahoo.com). To get a domain name, you have to pay an annual fee to a registrar for the right to use that name. 2- Buy a web hosting service to provide your online space and enable you to get your website online at your purchased domain name.

If you want to start your website I recommend purchase your domain and hosting together. In this way it is possible to get your domain for free. Some hosting services offer this gift today.

As an experienced webmaster I recommend BH web hosting which I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer for hosting & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them.

Linux hosting runs linux on the servers. Windows hosting runs Windows on the servers. You dont need Linux on your system to use a linux host. As other people have stated, you only need to worry if you are using something that is ONLY linux/Windows specific. Flash can be served from both. The one thing to bear in mind, is if you are administering the server yourself, it might make sense to actually understand the server OS you are using. Eg. If you use a linux host, but are completely lost when it comes to administering it, then thats not very helpful. I would say go with Linux hosting if you can, since its more secure and is the best IMHO.

Linux is an open source system and is therefore more cost-effective to operate and maintain than Windows, meaning that Linux hosting will cost you less than Windows hosting. Linux also has a reputation for stability and speed which means that Linux web servers will crash less often than Windows web servers and Linux runs most processes faster than Windows.

Linux supports a wide range of software, applications, languages, and databases such as PHP, Perl, PostGre, MySQL, PostgreSQL and many others making it very scalable. On the downside, Linux is not fully compatible with some Microsoft technologies so if you are using Access, ASP, MS SQL, or VB development tools then Windows would be a better bet.

The main "advantage" or distinction of Windows servers is that they can run Microsoft software such as Access and MS SQL databases. Windows servers also offer web developers the use of Microsoft's programming environments such as Active Server Pages (ASP), Visual Basic Scripts, MS Index Server.

Users can develop web site using the familiar interface of Microsoft tools such as, Visual Interdev, and Microsoft Access. With ASP users can develop a database-driven web site using Microsoft Access and Microsoft SQL as the database

I'd go with Linux hosting instead of Windows for the following reasons.. there's plenty more

1. Linux is much cheaper

2. More secure

3. Generally runs quite a bit faster than Windows

4. 3rd party software (such as MySQL for example) are also usually free

Linux runs the vast majority of websites.

Windows hosting supports .aspx and .asp files. Windows is more exspensive to run, because there is licensing fees. If you are not running ASP, i would recommend going with linux, becuase the servers generally have less problems. Also, when on a linux server, any changes made to the web site happen immediately, where as windows, you could have to wait for up to an hour.

.com is a commercial web site

.org is an organization

.edu is is probably what you are looking for. they use .edu for colleges and education institutes.

They are are the OS name on which your website will be hosted, as such it does not have any difference. For educational institute .org is suitable (org stands for organisation).

linux is better as it's more secure an also has stricter rules regarding file formats, extensions, etc which is a quality usually crucial in most good web services. Did i also mention it's free?
