I'm thinking of someday switching off windows. I heard Linux is free to download, but I'm not sure what it does and how it's better than a windows or mac operating system.

also, I'm an avid artist/animator who uses photoshop and flash a lot (and will be learning maya sooner or later), so i'm wondering if Linux can support graphics like macs can.

I, too, decided to cut the cord from Windows. I straddled the fence between Linux and Mac for a longgggg time. I think Linux can do absolutely everything Mac and Windows can do.

Only thing is, I finally decided, Linux doesn't have a "company" behind it, somebody you can for danged sure count on to call for help. There are lots of forums here and there and all over, where you can ask questions, and maybe you'll find a fellow geek in your own home town or maybe in the next apartment, or whatever. But I'm a lazy cuss, and I'd rather have a guaranteed source of support.

I don't want to spend so much time DIDDLING the computer. I want to USE the computer! So I picked Mac.

We still have a couple PCs, one sitting on a shelf (I SHOULD give it to someone who could use it) and the other used by mi esposa. I'm lovin' my Mac.

You should download vmware server (free) install it, download a linux distribution or three and install it on the vmware server to get a feel for it. It's a lot different than Windows (and Mac) and I don't know that it would suit your needs very well without a LOT of extra work to get things working. Vmware will let you run it as a guest operating system inside of windows and should give you an idea of how cumbersome it can be.

linux is very stable

but you know most graphic software was made for mac

hollywood uses macs to make music, graphics and watch dailies

things eventually migrated to windows

even American Idol Gives Back, was wall-to-wall Macs

It was mission critical on live TV and it HAD to work every time

the brits chose MACs because they could not accept any of the excuses you hear with windows it was their money and their show and it HAD TO WORK macs did the job, just like mine always do

If you use Photoshop and Flash, then Linux is not for you. It supports tools that are similar to those, but not the actual apps themselves. If you are sick of Windows, you might like a Mac, but you'll be looking at major $$$ to upgrade and repurchase your Windows applications.

Linux has an AVID fan base of techy users who just love it to death. Despite their passion for it, they hardly ever talk about the negatives. Unless you enjoy tinkering with your computer, I'd avoid it altogether. If you're the type of person who just "wants it to work", then it's not for you.

so.....not many know that MAC is centered around the FreeBSD kernel........

Tell you what you can do.........Download the LiveCD from http://www.ubuntu.com/

You can download GIMP, which is a very similar design tool akin to PhotoShop.............It is by no means CS3, but it is very functional.........

Keep in mind, running from the CD, your experience will be depreciated as the CD's transfer speed is no where near the transfer speed of the hard disk.........but you will have an idea.

I would advise to wait until the new relase of Ubuntu in 7 days.........it is much improved......

Also, join the forums and ask your questions.

http://ubuntuforums.org/

The benefit is FREE to download, FREE to install on as many systems as you wish, FREE to share and if you are so inclined to do so, it is FREE to be changed so long as you share your changes with the community. Most software is also free.....there are many versions you can buy, I believe that Photo shop will have a Linux release shortly.
